How do we know when we are pleased

Last night I listened to an mp3 of Son House singing a song I had never heard before at Honey where you been so long. I loved it.

A compressed version of a song recorded on 1939 equipment then sampled from (I guess) a 1990’s technology turntable and then compressed. During my lifetime it was thought that it took synchronous ~64kps for satisfactory audio of a telephone call. Turns out folks will accept a lot less - especially if it is mobile or cheap. TV commercials show the shift. “Can you hear me now?” is a fair cry from hearing a pin drop.

Most days I play my mp3 player through my expensive home speakers. I have the same songs on CD and I know the quality is different, but the mp3 player doesn’t take as long as the CD juke box to get to the next piece. Quality and convenience elasticity. Personally, I can’t predict what will satisfy me - or anyone else.

I also listened to an mp3 of John Fahey playing a song that I hadn’t heard in over 30 years at a site I can’t remember. I loved that too.
